Embracing the Absurd

A research residency exploring clowning as choreographic practice through props, costume, improvisation, play, exaggeration, and physical absurdity.
During the residency, I explored clowning as a choreographic practice, using simple props, costume, and improvisation to access an eccentric mode of movement. Rather than approaching the clown as a theatrical character, I asked how a clown might move through the body of a trained dancer. This inquiry shifted my attention towards play, exaggeration, variation, and physical absurdity as choreographic tools.
Alongside these studio explorations, the residency became a personal investigation into questions of home, belonging, and identity. These themes gradually emerged through movement rather than narrative, informing the development of the research from within the practice itself.
The residency also fostered a strong sense of community. Daily meditation sessions, shared meals, and conversations with local and international artists created an environment of collective learning and exchange that deeply influenced the research process.
